Our History
The first hint of a provincial golf association is from September 21, 1897 when the Winnipeg Free Press reported: “The amateur golf championship of Southern Alberta will be contested at (Fort) Macleod on Monday and Tuesday, Sept 27th and 28th.” It wasn’t until 1908 that the first provincial champion was declared: Charlie Hague of the hosting Calgary Golf and Country Club. The championship would then alternate between the Calgary Golf and Country Club and the Edmonton Country Club. On October 6th 1911, the Calgary Golf and Country Club hosted a dinner which would become known as the Alberta Golf Association’s founding event.
The five founding clubs of the Alberta Golf Association were: The Lethbridge Country Club, The Fort Macleod Golf Club, Calgary St Andrews Golf Club, The Edmonton Country Club, and the Calgary Golf and Country Club. The 1912 executive of the newly minted Alberta Golf Association was composed of President A. McMahon of Calgary, Vice President Dr Cobbett of Edmonton, and Secretary-Treasurer T. Gillespie of Granum.
